About me

Iíve been working as a journalist for 10 years, mostly for the Guardian and Observer and the Financial Times.

I currently specialize in business, politics and current affairs, but I have also written about everything from films and music to sport and health.

Currently I'm the construction and support services reporter for the Financial Times, having previously worked as the FT's Americas world news editor and as the Guardian's Australia correspondent.

In my current job I cover more than 80 companies, including more than 50 with market caps that would place them in the S&P/ASX 100. I meet and interview their CEOs and other senior executives on a daily basis.

I am responsible for picking up and analysing key emerging trends in my sectors, bringing companies to life through interviews with their senior executives, as well as generating scoops and covering company results.

I've broken major stories on the wave of refinancings and capital raisings that has hit my patch since the New Year, including the equity raisings from builder's merchants Wolseley and SIG and the refinancings by housebuilders Taylor Wimpey and Crest Nicholson.

I am also an experienced editor, and worked as the FTís Americas editor from 2007 to 2009. I was also responsible for commissioning and editing the FT's award-winning coverage of the US presidential election, the subprime crisis and broader credit crunch, and the decline of the Detroit car industry.

In my previous major reporting stint as the Guardian's Australia correspondent, I covered all Australia's major international stories of the day, as well as writing a regular online column and filing reportage-style pieces, features, and analysis.

I believe I write clear, pithy copy with an eye for a telling quote and a turn of phrase, as well as a rigorous sense of evidence and balance.

Having spent two and a half years covering Australia as a correspondent, I'm very familiar with Australia's major companies, economy and politics. I have an extensive contacts book from my time there, and I am experienced in audio and video broadcasting, blogging and editing.

I am an accomplished writer of analysis and comment. I write stock tips for the Financial Times and had a regular online column while working at the Guardian.

Iím married to an Australian citizen and am an Australian permanent resident with full work rights in the country.
